From Autumnal Still Life to Handmade Print

Celebrate the colours, textures and forms of autumn in this immersive, hands-on day of drawing and printmaking.

Students will begin the day by observing and drawing an autumnal still life, exploring composition, shape, tone, texture and pattern. They’ll then take their favourite ideas and transform them into a lino-cut design, learning how to create their own handmade prints.

The workshop takes students through the creative process from initial observation and sketching to designing, carving and printing a finished artwork.

Morning — Drawing the Autumnal Still Life

The day begins with an arranged autumnal still life featuring seasonal objects, natural forms and interesting textures.

Students will learn how to look closely at their subjects and capture their character through line, shape, tone and composition. They’ll experiment with different drawing techniques before developing their ideas into a final design suitable for lino printing.

Students will explore:

• Composition and how to arrange a still life

• Shape, proportion and observation

• Line and mark-making

• Light and shadow

• Texture and pattern

• Simplifying an image into a strong print design

The morning is all about observation and experimentation — discovering how ordinary autumnal objects can become beautiful and expressive artwork.

Afternoon — Lino Cutting & Printmaking

Now the drawing becomes a print.

Students will learn how to transfer their design onto a lino block and carefully carve away areas to create their printing surface. They’ll explore positive and negative space and discover how line and texture can be used to create contrast and detail.

Once their lino block is ready, students will ink it up and begin printing. They’ll experiment with composition, placement and layering to create a series of handmade prints.

Each print will have its own unique character, with the natural variations of the handmade process making every piece individual.

Create, Print & Take Home

By the end of the day, students will have developed an original autumnal still life drawing and transformed it into a finished lino-cut print.

They’ll leave with their own handmade prints and an introduction to a traditional printmaking technique that combines observation, drawing, design and craftsmanship.
