What makes a film world feel real?
Step into the role of a production designer and create an interior set for an imaginary film.
Explore how atmosphere, architecture, furniture, colour, lighting and detail can tell a story without saying a word. Develop your film set concept in the morning, then transform your ideas into a detailed 3D model in the afternoon.
Morning — Design Your Film Set
Choose or develop a fictional film concept and create an important interior location within its world. It could be a mysterious old mansion, futuristic spaceship, magical library, villain’s lair or teenager’s bedroom in 2050.
Explore how the space can communicate character, time, place and mood.
Develop:
The story and purpose of your set
Atmosphere and mood
Layout and architecture
Furniture and key objects
Colour and material palettes
Lighting and visual details
How the space reflects its characters
How the audience will experience the space
Create a concept board, floor plan and sketches of the key features that will become part of your model.
Afternoon — Build Your Film Set
Transform your design from the page into three dimensions.
Build your miniature film set using cardboard, craft materials and everyday objects. Experiment with scale, structure, texture and materials as you create walls, floors, furniture, windows, doors and decorative details.
Think about how every detail can contribute to the story. A forgotten photograph, unusual piece of furniture, hidden doorway or carefully chosen colour can reveal something about the world and its characters.
Bring the Story to Life
Design, build and tell a story through space. By the end of the day, you’ll have created your own miniature film set and discovered how production design, interior design, architecture, art and storytelling come together to create the worlds we see on screen.
Perfect for aspiring production designers, interior designers, architects, filmmakers, artists and anyone fascinated by the worlds behind movies.
