From Film Concept to 3D Set

What makes a film world feel real?

In this immersive, hands-on workshop, students will step into the role of a production designer and create an interior set for an imaginary film.

From the atmosphere and architecture to the furniture, colour, lighting and smallest details, every element of a film set helps tell the story. Students will explore how designers create environments that communicate character, time, place and mood.

They’ll develop their own film set concept in the morning before bringing it to life as a detailed 3D model in the afternoon.

Morning — Design Your Film Set

The day begins with the story.

Students will choose or develop a fictional film concept and identify an important interior location within it. This could be anything from a mysterious old mansion or futuristic spaceship to a magical library, villain's lair or teenager's bedroom in 2050.

They’ll explore how the set can help tell the story without saying a word.

Students will develop:

• The story and purpose of their set

• The atmosphere and mood

• The layout and architecture

• Furniture and key objects

• Colour and material palettes

• Lighting and visual details

• How the set reflects its characters

• How the audience will experience the space

They’ll create a concept board and floor plan, along with sketches of important features and details that will eventually become part of their model.

Afternoon — Build Your Film Set

Now the set moves from the page into three dimensions.

Using cardboard, craft materials and everyday household objects, students will construct a miniature version of their film set.

They’ll experiment with scale, structure, texture and materials as they build walls, floors, furniture, windows, doors and decorative details.

The focus is not simply on making a model look good — every design decision should help communicate the story.

A forgotten photograph, an unusual piece of furniture, a hidden doorway or a particular colour can tell the audience something about the world they've created.

Bring the Story to Life

By the end of the day, students will have designed and built their own miniature film set, taking an idea from an initial story through to a finished three-dimensional environment.

They’ll gain an introduction to production design and discover how interior design, architecture, art and storytelling come together to create the worlds we see on screen.

No previous design or model-making experience is needed — just imagination, curiosity and an interest in creating something from scratch.
