Drawing & Visual Communication

Introduction

The YDA Drawing & Visual Communication Pathway gives students a broad and progressive understanding of drawing, illustration and visual design. Rather than focusing on one drawing style or technique, the programme develops fundamental skills in observation, creative expression and visual communication, allowing students to apply their skills across a range of creative projects.

Pathway Structure

The Drawing and Graphic Communication Pathway develops the drawing and visual communication skills that underpin many areas of design. Students begin by learning the fundamentals of drawing, including point and line, shape and form, tonal value and shading, scale and proportion, perspective and drawing materials.

As they progress, students apply their drawing and observation skills to design problems, exploring composition, colour theory, visual perception and graphic communication. Projects include book jackets, repeat patterns for print, botanical design and graphic portraits.

At the Innovator stage, students develop their own visual voice and use drawing to explore original concepts and narratives. Projects include character design, storyboards, interior and set design, and poster design, helping students integrate their skills to communicate ideas with clarity and purpose.
