Fashion & Textiles

Introduction
The YDA Fashion & Textiles Pathway gives students a broad and progressive understanding of how fashion is imagined, designed, developed and communicated. The programme develops five fundamental areas of fashion design, exploring the relationship between the body, garment, material, concept and overall fashion image.
Pathway Structure
The Fashion Design Pathway takes students from exploring the fundamentals of fashion through to developing original design concepts and collections. Students begin by developing fashion illustration and sketching skills while exploring colour, fabric, texture, shape, silhouette, proportion and sources of inspiration.
As they progress, students learn how designers develop and communicate solutions through pattern cutting, garment construction, technical drawing, materials, sustainability, fit and function. They develop their skills through projects such as T-shirt collections, textiles and pattern exploration, streetwear collections, sewing projects and fashion branding.
At the Innovator stage, students explore concept development, storytelling, trend research, innovative materials, sustainability and circular fashion, developing original collections and portfolio-ready projects.

The Five Fundamentals
How fashion designers communicate ideas through drawing and illustration, including proportion, pose, garment detail, styling and visual presentation.
Fashion Drawing & Illustration
How garments are shaped and constructed around the body, exploring proportion, structure, drape, volume, manipulation and silhouette.
Garment Form & Silhouette
Fabrics, texture, pattern, print, surface techniques and alternative materials, and how material choices influence appearance, function and character.
Textiles, Surface & Materials
How designers research, generate, experiment with and refine ideas, turning inspiration into purposeful fashion concepts and resolved designs.
Design Development & Concept
How garments and looks work together as a coherent fashion story, and how styling, presentation, target audience and creative direction communicate identity.
