Interior Design

Introduction

The YDA Interior Design Pathway gives students a broad and progressive understanding of how interiors are planned, shaped and experienced. The programme develops five fundamental areas of interior design, allowing students to build practical design skills while exploring how spaces respond to people, purpose, atmosphere and experience.

Pathway Structure

The Interior Design Pathway explores how people experience and use the spaces around them. Students learn the fundamental principles of interior design, including scale and proportion, floor plans, furniture layouts, human-centred design, interior styles and presentation techniques.

As they progress, students develop more advanced spatial design skills, exploring zoning, circulation, section drawings, multi-level spaces, commercial interiors, user experience and lighting design. Projects include tiny houses, boutique hotel rooms, cafés, restaurants, loft apartments, nursery schools and retail spaces.

At the Innovator stage, students develop original concepts and immersive experiences, exploring areas such as adaptive reuse, future environments, narrative design and experience design.

The Five Fundamentals

How interior spaces are organised for different activities and users, including zoning, furniture placement, spatial hierarchy and efficient use of space.

Space Planning & Zoning

Human scale, furniture dimensions, proportion and ergonomics, and how the size and relationship of elements affect comfort and the character of an interior.

Scale & Proportion

How people move through interiors and how routes, thresholds, entrances, pauses and transitions can improve function and experience.

Circulation & Flow

Colour, texture, pattern, finishes and material combinations, and how these influence mood, identity, function and sensory quality.

Colour & Materials

How natural and artificial light shape interiors, including light, shadow, focal points, atmosphere and spatial experience.
