Service Description
The Reading Pavilion – Architecture Workshop Date: 1 April 2026 Time: 9:30-16:00 Cost: £90 (includes all materials and refreshments, please provide packed lunch) Age: students aged 11+ with a creative spark and an interest in design, architecture, or problem-solving This one-day workshop introduces students to the architectural design process through the creation of a small public structure. Participants will design a reading pavilion— a quiet architectural space where people can sit, relax, and read in an outdoor setting such as a park or garden. The day is divided into two connected sessions that guide students through the process of developing an architectural idea and transforming it into a physical model. Morning Session: Design Studio (9:30–12:30) Students will begin by developing a concept for their reading pavilion. Through sketching and design development, they will explore how the pavilion can provide shelter, light, and seating for readers. Participants will then create scale drawings, including a floor plan and elevation, learning how architects communicate spatial ideas through measured drawings. These drawings will form the basis for the model built in the afternoon session. LUNCH BREAK: Please provide packed lunch Afternoon Session: Model Making (1:30–4:30) In the afternoon, students will construct a three-dimensional architectural model** of their pavilion. Using card and simple model-making materials, they will build a scaled version of the design developed earlier in the day. This hands-on session helps students understand how architectural drawings translate into physical space and form. By the end of the workshop, participants will have produced both architectural drawings and a physical model, offering an introduction to the creative and practical stages of architectural design.
