The Explorer Focus

How do designers learn to see?

At the Explorer stage, students learn the fundamentals of drawing and visual communication, developing the observation and drawing skills that form the foundation of creative design. They explore how line, shape, form, tone, scale and proportion can be used to observe, understand and communicate ideas visually.

Students complete four self-paced projects, developing their ability to explore the key ideas and skills of this stage.

Projects are self-paced and typically take around 6 sessions to complete, allowing students to develop their ideas at their own pace.

Design an engaging interior space

Develop an interior concept that responds to users, purpose, space and basic design principles.

Plan and organise spaces effectively

Learn to create floor plans and layouts that consider circulation, furniture, scale and how people move through and use a space.

Communicate interior design ideas

Use sketches, drawings, moodboards, materials and models to develop and present design ideas clearly.

DEVELOPER

The Developer Focus

Students tackle increasingly complex interior design challenges, developing their ability to solve spatial and functional problems. They build on their understanding of space and user needs while exploring lighting, zoning, circulation, section drawings, multi-level spaces and commercial interiors.

Students complete four self-paced projects, developing their ability to respond to more complex design briefs and communicate considered interior solutions.

Across the projects, they explore:

Lighting design & atmosphere
Zoning, circulation & spatial planning
Section drawings & vertical space
Multi-level interiors
Commercial interiors & user experience

Projects are self-paced and typically take around 6 sessions to complete, allowing students to develop and refine their ideas at their own pace.

Key Outcomes:

Design complex interior spaces

Develop interior proposals that respond to users, function, space and more complex design requirements.

Create plans, elevations and section drawings

Learn to communicate spatial ideas accurately through floor plans, elevations, sections and other design drawings.

Solve spatial and functional challenges

Make informed design decisions about circulation, zoning, lighting, materials and atmosphere.

Present professional design proposals

Develop and communicate a coherent interior design concept through drawings, models, visuals and presentation techniques.

INNOVATOR

The Innovator Focus

Students explore how interior designers create original and memorable experiences, moving beyond functional design to consider atmosphere, narrative, emotion and interaction. They develop their own creative voice while exploring innovative approaches to adaptive re-use, immersive environments and future spaces.

Students complete four self-paced projects, tackling open-ended design challenges that encourage experimentation, original thinking and creative problem-solving.

Across the projects, they explore:

Concept development & creative thinking
Narrative & experience design
Atmosphere, mood & sensory experience
Adaptive re-use & sustainable design
Innovative and future-focused spaces

Projects are self-paced and typically take around 6 sessions to complete, allowing students to develop, test and refine their ideas at their own pace.
