How do interior designers create engaging spaces?

At the Explorer stage, students learn the fundamentals of interior design and begin to understand how designers create spaces that are functional, engaging and responsive to the people who use them. They explore space, scale, proportion, circulation and atmosphere through practical design projects.

Students complete four self-paced projects, developing a broad foundation in interior design and creative problem-solving.

Across the projects, they explore:

Projects are self-paced and typically take around 6 sessions to complete, allowing students to develop their ideas at their own pace.

Learn to create floor plans and layouts that consider circulation, furniture, scale and how people move through and use a space.

DEVELOPER

The Developer Focus

How do interior designers solve spatial challenges?

At the Developer stage, students tackle increasingly complex interior design challenges, developing their ability to solve spatial and functional problems. They build on their understanding of space and user needs while exploring lighting, zoning, circulation, section drawings, multi-level spaces and commercial interiors.

• Zoning, circulation & spatial planning
• Section drawings & vertical space
• Multi-level interiors
• Commercial interiors & user experience

Students complete four self-paced projects, developing their ability to respond to more complex design briefs and communicate considered interior solutions.

Zoning, circulation & spatial planning
Section drawings & vertical space
Multi-level interiors
Commercial interiors & user experience

Projects are self-paced and typically take around 6 sessions to complete, allowing students to develop and refine their ideas at their own pace.

Design complex interior spaces

Develop interior proposals that respond to users, function, space and more complex design requirements.

Create plans, elevations and section drawings

Learn to communicate spatial ideas accurately through floor plans, elevations, sections and other design drawings.

Solve spatial and functional challenges

Make informed design decisions about circulation, zoning, lighting, materials and atmosphere.

Present professional design proposals

Develop and communicate a coherent interior design concept through drawings, models, visuals and presentation techniques.

INNOVATOR

The Innovator Focus

How do interior designers shape experiences?

At the Innovator stage, students explore how interior designers create original and memorable experiences, moving beyond functional design to consider atmosphere, narrative, emotion and interaction. They develop their own creative voice while exploring innovative approaches to adaptive re-use, immersive environments and future spaces.

• Narrative & experience design
• Atmosphere, mood & sensory experience
• Adaptive re-use & sustainable design
• Innovative and future-focused spaces

Students complete four self-paced projects, tackling open-ended design challenges that encourage experimentation, original thinking and creative problem-solving.

Across the projects, they explore:

Concept development & creative thinking
Narrative & experience design
Atmosphere, mood & sensory experience
Adaptive re-use & sustainable design
Innovative and future-focused spaces
