Service Description

Transform an Old Building (Adaptive Reuse) – Interior Design Workshop Date: 5 August 2026 Time: 9:30-16:00 Cost: £90 (includes all materials and refreshments, please provide packed lunch) Age: students aged 12+ with a creative spark and an interest in design, architecture, or problem-solving This one-day workshop introduces students to the creative process of repurposing an existing building into a functional and inspiring interior space. Participants will explore how interior designers can transform underused buildings into modern, engaging interiors, combining practical layouts with creative storytelling. Students will choose a building type to redesign, for example: * An old warehouse * An old house * A old public building Morning Session: Concept & Design (9:30–12:30) Students will develop a design concept for their chosen building. Activities include: 1. Concept Development – Decide on the new function of the building (e.g., gallery, café, co-working space, community hub). Consider the target users, atmosphere, and key interior zones. 2. Mood board Creation – Explore colours, materials, textures, furniture styles, and lighting that reflect the intended atmosphere. 3. Scale Drawings – Produce simple floor plans to communicate zoning, circulation, and the relationship between spaces. By the end of the morning, participants will have a clear design concept and drawn plans to guide the afternoon session. LUNCH BREAK (Please provide packed lunch) Afternoon Session: Interior Slice Model (1:30–4:30) In the afternoon, students will create a physical “slice” model of a key interior space from their design. Activities include: 1. Selecting a Space – Choose one area of the building that best represents the new function (e.g., a reading area, café corner, gallery space). 2. Model Construction – Using cardboard, foam board, or other simple materials, students construct a section or cut-away of the interior, including walls, furniture, and key design elements. 3. Detailing– Add textures, colours, and finishes to communicate atmosphere, lighting, and spatial experience. This hands-on activity allows students to explore interior design in 3D without building the entire structure. By the end of the workshop, students will have produced a mood board, scale drawings, and a physical interior slice model.
